Frequently Asked Questions
How much ash is needed for my memorial tile?
I only need a small amount of ash - approximately half a teaspoon. The collection kit I send includes a measuring spoon and clear instructions to ensure you send just the right amount. Any remaining ash will be incorporated into your companion touchstone heart.
Is my loved one's ash handled respectfully?
Absolutely. I treat every bit of ash with the utmost respect and care. Your loved one's ashes remain in a dedicated space in my studio, and I handle them with reverence throughout the creation process. Any unused ashes are returned to you with your completed pieces. Your loved one's ashes are handled with appropriate tikanga Māori protocols, including dedicated spaces and karakia. I ensure all aspects of creating your memorial honor both their memory and our cultural traditions in Aotearoa.
What if I'm nervous about sending the ashes?
I completely understand this concern. That's why I've created a secure collection kit with everything needed for safe transport, including a pre-paid courier bag for tracking. Each step has been carefully designed to ensure your loved one's ashes are protected.
Can I drop off my loved one's ashes in person instead of mailing them?
Yes, absolutely. I understand that some people feel nervous about sending ashes through the post, even with our secure collection kit. If you're in the Raglan area or able to travel here, you're welcome to arrange a time to drop off your loved one's ashes in person at my studio.
This can provide peace of mind and also gives you an opportunity to see the studio where your memorial piece will be created. During your visit, we can discuss any specific wishes for your memorial tile and I can answer any questions you might have about the process.
To arrange an in-person drop-off, please contact me directly at theloveremainsnz.co.nz after placing your order, and we'll schedule a time that works for you.
Can I choose specific colors?
Yes, you can select the base glaze color for your tile. However, please understand that the final appearance will be unique to your loved one's ashes - each piece develops its own character during firing, creating one-of-a-kind variations in texture and finish.
How long does the process take?
From the moment I receive your loved one's ashes, the creation process takes approximately 5 weeks. I'll keep you updated throughout this journey.
Will all the ashes be used in the memorial pieces?
During the process some minimal loss may occur during the creation of your pieces. Please be assured that I handle all ashes with the utmost care and respect throughout every step of the process. Any remaining ashes will be incorporated into your companion touchstone or returned to you with your completed pieces.
What happens if there's an issue during creation or shipping?
While rare, there are times when a tile may develop a crack during firing or become damaged in transit. If this happens, I will contact you immediately and work with you to create a replacement piece as quickly as possible. I understand how precious these memories are and will ensure you receive a memorial piece that honors your loved one beautifully. Your satisfaction and peace of mind are my highest priorities.
Can you add special dates or messages?
Yes, I can handwrite names, dates, or short messages on your tile using a special underglaze pencil. These appear above and below the heart-shaped center where your loved one's ashes are incorporated.
How should I care for my memorial tile?
Your tile is designed to last a lifetime with proper care. I recommend displaying it in an indoor location and cleaning gently with a soft, dry cloth when needed. Avoid harsh cleaners or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
What if I live outside New Zealand?
At this stage I'm only offering this service within New Zealand. But will update this if anything changes.

How it started
The idea of The Love Remains began with my friend Lee, who passed away in 2023 and his beautiful partner Ange, who kindly gave me the opportunity to create some lasting clay pieces using Lees ashes. It was such a special and privileged thing to do, that I wanted to share it with everyone who wants to keep a part of their special person or pet close to them in the form of a piece of a ceramic treasure.

Precious Memories
Every piece I create is more than just a tile - it's a bridge between memory and present, a physical touchstone of love that remains. I feel privileged to be trusted with creating these deeply personal memorials, and I bring the same care and attention to each piece as I would want for my own loved ones.
